Mythology
The product of Aphrodite and Poseidon, Sirens were born to cause chaos. Famously, Poseidon was the cause of Medusa’s curse. He assaulted her in Athena’s temple and, in retaliation, Athena cursed Medusa.
In much the same vein, Poseidon was not faithful when he took Aphrodite as a lover. She bore his children and cursed them all to a lonely existence, killing anyone they might have loved by singing them to their deaths. Not every Siren is born wanting to cause harm to mortals, but the curse ruled that if they did not sing they would lose their minds and, eventually, die.
Modern day Sirens have a bit more control.
With Aphrodite as their mother, Sirens are naturally beautiful. The magic that runs in their blood makes them naturally alluring to mortals and near impossible to say no to. They do still need to sing to maintain their well-being, but they can do more than drown humans. They can sing them into submission, manipulate them into doing whatever they please, and… eat them.
Sirens are naturally independent creatures. Though a rich bloodline follows them, most Sirens only pair up to procreate. Love is usually not on the forefront of a Sirens mind. If they happen to sing to any prospective love interest, they can accidentally influence them wrongly.
In salt water, Sirens transform. They grow tails, their hands turn to claws, eye color changes, and an extra row of teeth grows in; they are monsters. This was Aphrodite’s doing, as Poseidon ruled the water and she didn’t want their children to be beautiful when he was with them.
Monstrous as they are, humans still find Sirens in water irresistible.
Background
When Jupiter was young, he didn’t agree with his “family values.” He fancied himself a much better person than that. He didn’t see the need to kill.
Of course, his family did manage to make him sing at least once a month. Sometimes he drew people in and his older brother would finish the rest, but he was still a participant. He always cried and refused to sleep in the cove with his family. They had a little cabin mostly used by Jupiter and he found himself often alienated.
He didn’t know his family well. When he was still a teenager, they left him on the shore and never came back. Pirates spotted them and killed them, at least that’s what Jupiter heard the underground news channels he followed.
He grew up on his own after that. Solitary, but never too unhappy. He hunted the pirates for awhile before getting bored of being angry and being upset with himself for the murders he nearly caused along the way.
He still isn’t at peace with his nature. He struck a deal with a witch to get a talisman that kept his Siren side much more subdued. He didn’t need to sing to keep from dying. In trade, he had to assist the witch whenever he was needed.
He blended into the human world and, with the help of the talisman, has returned to his mission of finding the men that killed his family. He also takes it upon himself to try to keep fellow Sirens safe from the same fate.
He thinks he is on a moral high ground, but how long can that last?
